What Is BVN and Why It Matters for Your Bank Account
Your Bank Verification Number is the single most important identifier in Nigerian banking. Here's what it does — and what it does not.

Every Nigerian bank customer needs a Bank Verification Number — BVN — and every Bompai customer is no exception. Despite how common it is, there is still confusion about what it actually does.
What BVN is
BVN is a unique 11-digit number issued by the Central Bank of Nigeria and tied to your biometric data — your fingerprints, face and signature. It is the same across every bank you use, so it acts as a single identifier for you across the Nigerian banking system.
What BVN does
- Confirms your identity when you open new accounts.
- Lets fraud teams across banks share alerts about suspicious activity.
- Speeds up KYC for products like loans and salary accounts.
- Helps Bompai recover your account if you lose your ID or phone.
What BVN does NOT do
- It does NOT let anyone debit your account on its own.
- It is NOT a password — it cannot log you in by itself.
- It does NOT give Bompai or any bank access to your money in other banks.
- It does NOT expire — once issued, it stays with you for life.
How to get a BVN
Visit any Bompai branch with a valid government ID and we will enrol you on the BVN system at no cost. The process takes about 15 minutes. Once issued, you can link your BVN to your Bompai account immediately and we'll activate the full range of services for you.
Keeping your BVN safe
Treat your BVN like your ID number — don't share it casually, never post it on social media, and never give it to anyone calling to 'verify' your account. Bompai already has it on file.
